Since 1929 the Metropolitan District (MDC) has managed the Hartford region’s water and sewer systems developed in the 1850’s. In the past, system investments have increased sewer system capacity, and wastewater treatment capability, to minimize sewage impacts on area waterways.

The Clean Water Project, which includes over $2 billion in infrastructure improvements to the MDC’s wastewater system, helps protect the health and safety of citizens during storm events and formally addresses a federal consent decree and a Connecticut DEEP consent order to achieve Federal Clean Water Act goals.
