MDC completes $22 million infrastructure improvement project in North Hartford
Project delivers modernized infrastructure, private property improvements and environmental benefits while supporting long-term regulatory compliance goals.

(Hartford, CT) The Metropolitan District (MDC) announced completion of the Westland and Garden Street area Sewer Separation project, a key component of the North Hartford Sewer Improvement Projects, the $170 million Integrated Plan, part of a consent order with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP).  The Integrated Plan is the current phase of the MDC’s Clean Water Project, a multibillion-dollar effort to reduce combined sewer overflows and improve the overall efficiency of the sewer system.

The $22 million project, located in North Hartford in the neighborhoods of Westland Street, Garden Street, Risley Street and Love Lane, included 135 properties. The work included over one mile of new sewer main and sewer lining, over half a mile of new storm drain and over a mile of water main replacement.

Private property improvements such as lining of sewer house connection laterals and basement assessments were included as part of the work. In addition, the MDC partnered with local North Hartford community members in the project area by establishing the MDC Community Outreach Office on Barbour Street as well as multiple construction equipment lay down and storage areas in the project area neighborhood.

“This project demonstrates how the MDC works hand in hand with the community to get through a major project that caused significant disruption to the area. Now there’s brand new infrastructure and a safer, healthier neighborhood left in better condition than when we started,” said MDC CEO Scott Jellison.  MDC Chairman Donald Currey stated, “The completion of this project represents another important milestone in our Integrated Plan. Our approach is focused on achieving regulatory compliance while remaining sensitive to customer affordability. In addition, these projects create added value for our customers through direct improvements to private property.”
